How did the Complementary Medical Research entity of BFW Institute of Research & Education begin?
Doug Huseby, founder and owner of Becker Furniture World, has been in business for over 35 years and has always been interested in bottom line results. He has studied options for him and his family to stay healthy and avoid the pain and suffering of acquiring deadly illnesses prematurely, along with finding a solution to simply avoid getting sick with the latest “bug” going around.
In 1987, Doug lost his mother as a result of an operation that he felt could have been avoided if the option of complementary medicine and therapies would have been provided. Since her death, he has watched countless friends and family members suffer, only to lose their battles. These events launched a deep and intense passion to learn more about medical options, including complementary medicine and therapy.
The BFW Institute of Research & Education Complementary Medical Research program strives to achieve four major goals.
- Develop a research and education plan to help people understand their options on total health based on natural principles of wellness. This may include either traditional or complementary health methods.
- Review and understand each ailment/remedy and how to apply it to our health concerns with your Doctor participating.
- Elevate the public and professional awareness of this research by web or Internet, reports, pamphlets, books, personal coaching and audio-visual materials.
- Promote freedom of choice on health care options and be able to choose a health care practitioner, traditional or complementary, whose treatment will be covered by medical insurance.
What are our options in health care?
There are two systems of health care available in this country today. The first being Conventional Western Medicine, which is the world of the American Medical Association and medical doctors, who are allies with the pharmaceutical industry and do a great job when it comes to surgery and trauma. There is also no doubt that conventional medicine excels in many areas including medical emergencies, certain bacterial infections, trauma care and many surgical techniques.
The second system is Complementary Medicine, which may work on almost any disease including common ailments such as asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, headaches and sinusitis. Although complementary medicine has a lot to offer, it is often overlooked, even though there are thousands of complementary physicians and practitioners worldwide. These methods are based on science and there are countless people who have found them effective through experience. Complementary medicines can be very effective over long term because it emphasizes prevention and goes after the cause rather than just treating symptoms.
According to many official reports, it is not surprising to most, that our medical system is in trouble financially. The premium rates are rising each year and many people are not even covered by insurance because of the high costs. According to statistics, our nation pays more for our medical care than other comparable nations. Treatment of chronic diseases currently accounts for as high as 85% of the national health bill. Some believe we are a nation waiting for an illness to develop and then spend exuberant amounts of money to treat the symptoms, rather than focusing on prevention of any such illnesses.
The BFW Institute of Research and Education is not against mainstream conventional medicine, we just ask why not use the best of BOTH Eastern and Western procedures? There is no single approach that works for all people, or with all conditions, so we feel there should be options for people. My family uses both Traditional and Complementary medicine and we get great results.
Despite the fact that freedom is a basic American right, one area of American freedom that is being challenged in many ways is the freedom to choose healthcare options under insurance plans being offered.
